TV - Home - there's no place like it

video

“Home – there’s no place like it”

A revamped TV channel, Home, launches at 9am on Thursday 30th April 2009 and there is plenty in store to be excited about. I have always been a fan of TV programmes offering a sneak peek into the homes of other people. Some may say I am just nosy, but all in the name of style I would argue - which of course makes it OK.

Home was formerly known as UKTV Style, but with a new name will be a new look channel packed with inspirational home and gardens programming. Commissions, such as Celebrity Fantasy Homes with Gaby Roslin, Love The Place You’re In with Gordon Whistance and Gutted with Mark Durden Smith, will play alongside the phenomenally successful US show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (which I love by the way) and popular series including DIY SOS, Escape To The Country, and Ground Force. Home promises plenty to entertain us all with energetic, stylish and motivating programming that shows viewers how to enjoy and maximise their space, both inside and out.

Make sure you catch these new programmes, both exclusive to Home...

Celebrity Fantasy Homes

Starts on Thursday 30th April at 9pm on Home.
Celebrity Fantasy Homes follows famous house hunters in search of their dream properties in the UK and abroad. Gaby Roslin (Children in Need, The Big Breakfast) takes celebrity property hunters David Gest, Lady Victoria Hervey, Brendon Cole, Lee Sharpe, Sherri Hewson, the Right Said Fred brothers and Mica Paris to view four prospective properties. Each programme is dedicated to a different celebrity taking viewers to fantasy properties spanning London, Spain, Sardinia, the Home Counties, Windsor and Cambridge.

Gutted

Watch it Mondays at 10am from May 4th
Mark Durden-Smith lifts the lid on Britain’s most cluttered houses and targets hoarding homeowners in Gutted. From rooms filled to the rafters with junk or families in desperate need of extra space, Mark and the team come to the rescue. Families fed up with sharing their space with a load of old tat nominate an unsuspecting hoarder who gets the fright of their life when they return home to find all of their worldly possessions missing and their house stripped bare! Briefly they breathe a sigh of relief when they learn their belongings are safely stored in a removal van parked outside. However, to win their possessions back the ‘Guttees’ have to remember everything they own… AND correctly answer a question about the item…

IDEA - Peachy Queen Jelly Bean

queen jelly bean
Take a look at this iconic image of the young Queen Elizabeth looking winsome and charming, but look closer and you will find that this portrait is crafted from thousands of jelly beans.

Jelly Belly® jelly beans come in 50 different flavours – and colours - the perfect artist’s palette” says Roger Rocha who took 5 weeks of skill and patience to create the picture. He is not admitting to the number of beans he ate along the way. National Jelly Bean Day was on April 22 - the day after the Queen's birthday.

Each year, over 100,000 UK Jelly Belly jelly bean fans vote for their favourite Jelly Belly bean flavour, and the 2008/9 results show that the UK has placed CANDY FLOSS tops for the second year in a row. VERY CHERRY is a close second – knocking STRAWBERRY CHEESECAKE into third place.

Jelly Belly was invented in 1976 with just 8 flavours. All that time ago, it was revolutionary for a jelly bean to have a flavour that went all the way from the shell to the centre. Herm Rowland, Chairman of the Jelly Belly Candy Co. in California, insists that each flavour has to be truly authentic – “really really real” and if possible, even better than the real thing. It can take up to four years for a flavour to become a Jelly Belly jelly bean – plus a lot of work, research and hard cooking. Jelly Belly jelly beans were made famous by Ronald Reagan (favourite flavour liquorice) and it was because Reagan requested that VIP visitors to the American Embassy in London were presented with a jar of Jelly Belly that the beans found their way into the UK.

The UK's top ten flavours are listed below...

1. Candy Floss
2. Very Cherry
3. Strawberry Cheesecake
4. Liquorice
5. Tutti-Fruitti
6. Bubble Gum
7. Green Apple
8. Vanilla
9. Coconut
10. Juicy Pear

FOOD - The Graze Craze Explained

fruit snack
Does Graze amaze? With all of the ASOS girls Twittering about Graze.com I was as keen as anyone to find out. Fellow blogger Frankie of the fabulous Swell Vintage shares her experiences...

'When one of my colleagues sent an email round about Graze.com, I was intrigued. Working in an office, especially in a female dominated marketing department, can lead to a number of potentially damaging activities: bitching, heated debates regarding Hollyoaks and, arguably the most lethal, excessive snacking. With Graze promising to send 3 of my 5 a-day directly to my desk, I decided to give it a go and swap my normal lunch time routine for something healthier and more modern.

I sign up for one of their trial offers, getting me my first box for £1 and my next two for half the full price (£2.99). The next step is to browse their food selections and rate them according to how much you’d like to try them. There’s plenty to choose from, and all of it sounds interesting and appetising.

According to the Graze website, grazing on their natural foods throughout the day instead of eating once at lunch time is a great way to lose weight by controlling blood sugar. In theory, this sounds like a brilliant idea (who wouldn’t want to eat constantly all day long?), but does it work in practice? By the time I’ve placed my first order, my stomach is rumbling and ready to go!

Monday: My first box is due to arrive, but it doesn’t get to me until Tuesday. However, the Graze customer service team are most obliging, and credit me £1.50 by way of an apology.

office snacks
Tuesday:
My box arrives – yippee! It looks great, is made from recyclable materials and even contains a handy card telling me all of the nutritional information of the day’s offering. This includes fresh cut apple, “fruit squash” (dried mango, blueberries and pumpkin seeds) and black pepper cashews. I start on the apple which, despite getting to me a day late, is still fresh due to clever vacuum packing. In the spirit of the “grazing philosophy”, I do my best to spread the food over the course of the day, so I don’t eat my black pepper cashews until the early afternoon. These are absolutely delicious, and as soon as I finish them, I wish I had more. Not to worry though, I’ve got my “fruit squash” to look forward to. I’d never tried dried blueberries before, but they are very nice – I highly recommend them.

By the end of the day, I’m surprised that I don’t feel as hungry as I thought I would, and I look forward to my next box, due to arrive tomorrow.

Wednesday: After hungrily waiting for my box all morning, I realise it’s not coming. I feel disappointed, and although the Graze customer services team again refund me my money, I’m beginning to lose faith in the system. However, I understand that Graze is still a relatively new company, and that there are bound to be some kinks in the beginning. I decide to keep an open mind, and hope my box will arrive safely tomorrow.

Thursday: The box arrives, and I can’t wait to tuck in. This one contains red and white grapes, “rouge” dried fruit mix (Dried strawberries, raspberries and cranberries) and the “omega” seed mix (Sunflower, pumpkin, sesame, linseed, flax, rapeseed and hemp). This box is definitely diverse, and I look forward to trying some new things. The “rouge” dried fruit is beautiful, and I am now hooked on dried strawberries. Even the seed mix proves very appetising, but I’m still hungry. Perhaps it’s because I went back to my normal lunch routine the day before.

My next box isn’t due to arrive until Monday but, considering the lateness of my last two boxes, I decide to change the scheduled arrival of it to Friday, thinking that that will mean it’ll arrive on Monday. And would you believe it? As if to prove me wrong, the box arrives on Friday, exactly as scheduled. Oh ye of little faith…

dried fruit seeds
Friday: Once I get over the initial shock of the box arriving when it was supposed to, I get started on my day's offering. This box includes fresh pineapple, the “ay caramba” mix (Cajun seed mix, dried goji berries, naturally dried apricots) and pine nuts. I love pineapple and, because it’s arrived on time, it’s nice and refreshing. The “ay caramba” mix, however, I’m not so keen on. The apricots are great, the goji berries are pleasant enough, but the Cajun seeds are a bit tasteless, so I struggle to finish them. This leaves me feeing a bit unsatisfied and, as a result, hungry.

After this box, I decide to give up Graze. Not because the food wasn’t nice or because a couple of the boxes were late, but because this style of eating just isn’t for me. I prefer to have three regular healthy meals a day, and if I fancy a snack, I’ll have one.

However, despite this seemingly negative review, I would still recommend trying Graze. I think the whole concept behind it is genius, and I really enjoyed most of the food they sent me. If you’re into healthy eating and are looking for a new and interesting diet to try, I recommend giving it a go. And with the first box at half price, you can’t go wrong.'

FURNITURE - An Ass-pirational Piece

designer furniture
Meet Martin the Mule. Designed by ibride and available for sale at Lifestyle Bazaar, this is one piece of furniture guaranteed to make an impact.

It doesn't come cheap though, as original design rarely does. This iconic item will set you back £3950. It can be used as a writing desk, or as a TV or audio stand but I can't say as it would go with any furniture I already own. Perhaps that is a reason to buy other items from ibride, and fatten his talented, designer pockets.

Thanks go to Kingdom of Style for finding this.

KITCHEN - Instant Meat Marinater

barbecue meat cooking

The Instant Marinater is said to marinate and tenderise meat, fish, chicken and vegetables in minutes. It works by creating a vacuum which opens up the pores and fibres of the meat allowing for a deep and instant marinate. This process also tenderises the food.

Marinating foods adds delicious flavors and protects them from the heat of the barbecue, grill, oven or pan. My mum has always done it for barbecues and her lemon, garlic and olive oil marinade always goes down a treat but the longer you leave it the better it is. This gadget allows you to have succulent and moist meat for the BBQ in a flash, meaning last minute plans are no longer a problem.

It comes with a recipe book too, so no excuses when summer comes. There are plenty of ideas for any aspiring outdoor chef.

THOUGHT - Petal Blossom Rainbow... Really?

room 1001
Petal Blossom Rainbow has been born, and while the Olivers coo over their new arrival, women around the country are cringing!

A poll from 1001, (the carpet cleaning experts), has revealed that celebrities calling their babies ridiculous names is one of women's biggest bug bears. In the celebrity world, being named after places, objects or fruit seem to be the norm, but for your average lady it’s just too much to comprehend, with nearly one in three admitting to getting irritated about it.

Topping the 1001 poll are the likes of wags and mistresses that seek to find fame off the back of someone else. Then, no surprises at No. 2 it’s the big brother rejects - those who don’t win the contest, yet turn up at every ‘celebrity’ party going.

And in the aftermath of the various political scandals, it won’t come as a shock that the fifth most annoying group of people in the public eye are the less than perfect politicians! Yes we really are fed up with reading about the officials conducting their private lives and managing their cash flow in a less than admirable manner.

The Top 5 people in the public eye that rile British women are:

1. People who become famous off the back of someone else (WAGs, mistresses)
2. Big Brother rejects
3. Celebrities who call their children ridiculous names
4. Celebrities who are airbrushed in magazines
5. Politicians

David Whittome from 1001 comments: ”Celebrity status clearly goes to people’s heads. They like to stand out from the crowd and extreme baby names are one such way of doing so, yet it does nothing but irritate others.

1001 is on a mission to make all irritations disappear and to make life a bit easier for the ladies. Join in the debate at www.room1001.co.uk where you can see other women’s pet hates for yourself and add your own.

FOOD - Big Kids Need Big Chocolate

easter chocolate

At Christmas my boss was kind enough to get me a lovely gift for all my hard work, a Flower Power gift box from Montezuma's. If you have not had the pleasure of Montezuma's chocolate before, I suggest you get down there before Easter.

The Milk Giant Buttons are my recommendation as they will be loved as much by adults as by the kids (yes that mean's you have to share). I also loved the Sweet Summertime variety made with white chocolate and raspberries.

Anyone who likes Turkish Delight will be a fan of the Montezuma's twist on a classic. Geranium Dollops are like Turkish Delight but with a subtle flavour difference. Oh, and all of the chocs mentioned are suitable for those on a gluten-free diet.

They may not be cheap, but these chocs will be much appreciated by whoever is lucky enough to get some.
